I looked out the window and saw ruined buildings, cracked streets, bullet-holes on the sides of walls, and even bomb craters. No this isn't some ancient city in Pakistan or Afghanistan, this used to be-
"Hey Matt," John's voice brought me back to Earth. "Dinner's ready!"
"I'll be down in a minute," I yelled back.
"That'll be a minute to late, by then all the food'll be gone," He replied.
I ran down the crumbly stairs that led to The Cavern. Dim lights illuminated the room; a long table with at least fifty people lined up to be served. Some strange meat and soup we're being severed, so I took my share. Nowadays you don't care what you eat, and if you do you starve. Taking my food with me I ran back up the stairs to The Lookout. I quietly ate my food reminiscing upon the time three years ago before It crushed everything.
"What are you dreaming about now," Sylvia asked..
"Nothing," I lied.
"You know full well that we cant live like that,"
"How do you know?"
"Take a look around, this used to be L.A."
"We can fix it we ju-"
"No we can't! It's too powerful, Its army took out the Edwards Air Force Base in less than a day!"
"We can launch a surprise atta-"
"Just forget it, we're hopeless and you know it"
That was the last thing she said before she stormed out of the room. After waiting a couple of seconds I also descended the stairs slowly, not wanting to encounter her again. As soon as I saw my room I literally jumped into bed, and after a couple minutes of thinking I drifted off to sleep.
"Matt! It's time to go scavenging," John yelled
"I'll be done in a minute!" I yelled back getting hit with a sudden wave of Deja-vu. I quickly put on my worn down Vans and headed down the stairs. John was waiting by the entrance with an empty red duffle bag.
"Let's go little bro!" John said with a grin. "We're going to Checkpoint A today"
As those words came out of his mouth my heart sank.
